A community loving a family through crisis

Earlier this year, the Janse van Rensburg family lost everything in a terrible house fire, that left nothing behind its blaze but ashes.

The family went out together to get food for the evening, only to return to a blazing house.

Where does one even start?

What do you do in such a situation?

The community mobilized

Thankfully, no one or any animal was hurt during the whole ordeal but every single item in the house went up in flames.

As early as the next morning, when Love Potch was made aware of the crisis, within an hour a relief plan was put into action to mobilize the community to support the family in several areas.

A community drop off point was setup, a needs list compiled and communication went out.

It is rare to see a community mobilize itself into action to address crises like this one in such speed and compassion.

Meals, clothes, appliances, hampers, gift cards, school uniforms and messages of encouragement and support flooded in from across town.

Soon, Bakkie loads of donations, clothes and even bigger items such as a washing machine and beds filled the available storage to capacity.

A local media company called JAKE media setup a webpage to effectively communicate the family’s needs and bigger organizations such as the MooiRivier Mall got involved by donating much needed specialized items and stationary for the kids for school.

Soon the family had everything they needed and were able to move into their new house also in Potchefstroom after staying with friends in town.

Handover at the mall

Thank you Potch!

A huge thank you goes out to each organization, business, school, family and individual who opened up their hearts, wallets, time, skills and even houses to Love the Janse van Rensburg Family.
